The research, which is being presented at the EPS conference in Barcelona, Spain, will be presented at the same time as a new particle that has been found by researchers at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. "These'soft' interactions are absorbed by the matter surrounding the colliding proton and antiproton, which alters their trajectories." The altered trajectories cause "thrust," which creates a small jet of particles that cannot be seen by the naked eye. To detect the particles, they are then "tagged" by detecting the energies in the jet. At the LHC, the collisions produce around 80 quarks per collision, of which roughly half are identified. However, according to Morozov, the new particle appears to only have a single partner, which implies that it has a very low mass and has never been detected before. Furthermore, as both the particle and antiparticle in this particle pair could be the same, Morozov said that there is no need for two particles to have identical masses.
